Michael has sailed just about anything there is to sail. He started sailing at the age of 12 in the Optimist class, and quickly graduated to Europe dinghy. At the age of 17 he started sailing Laser, one yeah later he won the European Youth Championship title, in 1987.

Michael competed in the Olympic Games in the 1996, and 2012 in the Star class, and agin in 2000 and the 2004 in the 49er class. In 2007 he sailed the Americas cup with Team Germany in Valencia.

Besides having raced on many types of dinghies and yachts – ranging from 20 to 130 feet – he has a passion for kitesurfing and goes jumping as high and as often as he can. Last year he took up hydrofoil kiting, where his top speed currently is is 28,5 knots.

Michael has won 28 World and European championship medals, primarily in Olympic classes, but also in various keelboats.

At the beginning of 2015, Michael joined SAP Extreme Sailing Team. His analytical mind,, and attention to detail, helped the Team to climb up the leaderboard to finish second overall in the Extreme Sailing Series in 2015 – the Team’s best result to date.

In 2016 Michael continues his work with SAP Extreme Sailing Team, as they move in to the newer, lighter, faster generation of GC32 foiling catamarans. Working closely with the Team, and with SAP Sailing Analytics, Michael has a place on the 2016 Extreme Sailing Series Podium, once again, squarely in his sights.
